Tutored Wine Tasting

Italian Wines

Out of all the countries that we are exploring in this series, Italy is arguably the most challenging but also the most interesting and satisfying.

Food and Wine is deeply ingrained in the Italian way of life, with an amazing larder of ingredients and regional dishes. Slow Food was founded in Italy and Salone del Gusto, a bi-annual food festival in Turin is a foodie Mecca.

It’s the sheer diversity of Italian wine that is frankly boggling; 21 regions, a multi – tiered quality control system creating hundreds of wine categories using an estimated 2000 different grape varieties most of which simply don’t exist outside their native areas.

Like many a wine producing country there are examples to be found of the finest wine anywhere on the globe, with demand far outstripping supply on the greatest Barolo, Amarone and the ‘Super Tuscans’. As tempting as it might be to open some of these or any of a multitude of ‘known’ wines from Soave, Chianti, Gavi or Gattinara to name but a few, this is the chance to try some equally worthy wine that does not get as much attention on the world market.

As with the rest of the series the wines featured are all selected from recent tasting by Stephen, carefully pairing them with a menu put together with the Head Chef.
